“My name’s not Alice!” I protested but the Red Queen ignored me.
“I found you in Philadelphia, Alice,” the Red Queen said. “A poor girl living on the streets.” I had only vague memories of that life. I could not even remember my name. “And now I have molded you into a powerful young woman. Once you are promoted I shall send you out into the world to make a difference, like we have talked about.
I opened my mouth to protest, but then I noticed the Knave, the Queen’s assistant, coming down the corridor toward us. “You sent for me, Majesty?” he asked.
“Yes, Alice is being obstinate,” she said.
“You wonder about all these trappings,” I said to the Knave. “Why are we all called Alice? Curiouser and curiouser.

“Trail-mix?” True asked as she looked at the bag in her hands. “You gave me trail-mix, as if that will stop my transformation?”
“It won’t stop it,” the apothecary said. “The hazelnuts and rowanberries are for wisdom, so that you can keep your consciousness when you do transform.”
“And the M&M’s?” True asked staring at the brightly colored candies in the bag.
“Chocolate was sacred to the Aztecs,” the apothecary said. “To the goddess of love. Help you to love even the animal aspect of yourself.”
True sighed to herself and took a handful. It did not really taste all that bad.
“This is not an easy problem to fix, True. You change into a wolf during the full moon. You have to come to terms with that, first of all.”
“Thank you,” True said as she paid. “For what it’s worth.”
